Benoit aims for Okayama International Circuit for SGT Rd2 after a somewhat disappointing FN race result the previous weekend. As a matter of fact he is in a very relaxed mood, the pressure to win the race is not there at all. Unlike at the opening round where, to win the race was the GT-R ultimate goal!Besides the extra 50Kg the car must carry throughout this year as part of the regulations, after the first win, and again as part of the SUPER GT regulations, this car has gained 55Kg more (50Kg in weight and 5Kg restrictor adjustments), in total, 105Kg of handy weight. Therefore NO one expected it to enter the top ranking much less to win. Not only that but this No.23 car, hasn’t had much luck at the Okayama circuit for at least a couple of years. So without much expectation, most would have been happy with just a couple of points. Although in Tokyo the seasonal cherry blossoms have turned to leaf, in Okayama all is in full bloom! But of course all this beauty attracts nothing but a feeling for relaxation and afternoon naps.Friday at the track: due to the previous night’s rain, the free practice runs proceeded on wet and intermediate tires. Benoit pits out before the rest, tries the rain tires changes to dry and goes for it. Not bad, 8th position! For the afternoon the weather clears completely. Nice and warm spring afternoon! Benoit takes a lunch nap and is refreshed for the afternoon practice. He simulates the time attack lap and makes the second position of 1’24.025, only 0.026 over the NSX on top. According to Benoit, who got off totally startled “I really was on the edge at every corner, I just didn’t let the steering wheel straighten throughout the lap”. Really! And of course nothing changed at the qualifying. The perfect tire choice for the extra weight on the car, two ranks harder then those of the other GT-R. In the morning session, when the temperature was still low, the raking was 4th but according to Benoit “the heavier the car the better grip. The car is running perfectly!” In the afternoon qualifying session, although the other cars were having trouble warming up the tires, Benoit’s time shortened 0.3~4 seconds. And so Benoit easily gets the Pole Positon! But of course judging from the Sunday morning session, we figured the race would be another story, the NSX, besides usually only changing two tires during race, seems much tougher on the long runs. Race begins: Benoit pushes like crazy on the first couple of laps; he succeeds in keeping a good enough gap from the NSX behind. Now to defend the position is the goal! But after 10 laps the NSX comes pressuring from behind, on the 20th lap the GT-R is momentarily overtaken, but due to an incident with a GT300, and although the pressure from behind wasn’t small, Benoit retrieves and keeps the top. Now the rain starts to fall, and it becomes hard to concentrate on a steady drive. We cant forget to thank the new pair of socks and shoes that, fortunately this time didn’t stop the blood stream or give any numbness to the foot, like in the last race (Believe it or not these things happen to best of us!!) Suddenly, the NSX is gone from the rearview mirror, he must have gone for an early pit stop, so Benoit hangs on a little longer, returns to the pit on the 40th lap and gives the wheel to Satoshi. Although he tries to keep the car in steady pace to the end, the Calsonic with Tsugio on the wheel starts pushing from behind. Benoit is stuck to the TV monitor praying for mercy, but of course Satoshi does not disappoint the teammate and finishes the 82 laps on top. The Ultimate SUPER Surprise GT Race Result! In the evening Benoit gets on the plane and who knows how they celebrated back in Tokyo, him and maybe his good friend and 2nd position Sebastian.
