Summer blahs? Stamina-up – Becomes the goal after FN Rd3.
Two weeks since the fantastic overtake performance at the Suzuka Circuit. This weekend, May 24th & 25th, the FN circus is at Motegi Circuit for Rd.3. In the short interval, Benoit and dear wife Melanie, have decided to go on a diet & exercise strict program. Summer is soon coming and they should be fit and set for the vacation at the coute-d’azur (ha-ha).
Not only that but the coming up Sepang SUPER GT race together with the humongous handicap weight Benoit’s team still carries, there is no doubt that the lighter the better!
Now, going back to the race weekend: which has suddenly changed from a pleasant spring-like dry and refreshing weather to the muggy and uncomfortable, typical Japanese rainy season. Apparently, Benoit’s car can feel it too and is refusing to race properly! Friday free practice: 10th position.
On Saturday, the weather is decent but not the car, which obviously is not leaving Benoit very pleased at all! He pushes hard but loses the right timing for attack and misses Q3 in the knockout qualifying system, by one position, he will start the race from the 9th grid.
Sunday, race day morning warm up begins on wet tires but it is obvious that the afternoon race will be held under dry surface but totally humid and “quick rotting” atmospheric conditions.
Benoit hits a great start, overtakes two positions and is now in 6th position due to the drive through penalty imposed on another driver for a flying start. However race pace isn’t increasing, although he succeeds in keeping position after the (always amazingly smooth) pit stop, Benoit has to eventually return to the pit and retire from the race due to a stuck gear box caused by damage in a tiny transmission part. So anyway neither the weather nor the weekend was very favorable for Benoit. Oh, forgot to mention, the moment he backed up into the pit, he exited the cockpit and ran to the toilets; something must have been definitely wrong!
BUT Benoit is not intimidated by this race season’s results so far! He is flying to France tomorrow and indulging in a high calorific and protein diet, he is determined to build up stamina to do the Le Mans tests, return to Okayama for the next FN race, go back to France for the actual 24hours of Les Mans race and fly to Malaysia for the annual overseas Super GT round! So never mind about a restricted diet! Life is to have fun! He’s ready to try the “so-appealing” Japanese Sumo wrestlers’ diet (ha-ha)!
