We were sure to have seen some signs of recovery~!!
This year hasn’t been his best FN results! Rd 5 took place at Suzuka Circuit on July 12th (Sat) and 13th (Sun), because the performance and the results at he previous race at Okayama were far from satisfactory, the team decided to widely change the set up for this one. However, once Benoit tried driving the car on Friday, they all realized it was not real. Something like driving a drift car on a FN race weekend. The rear was just absolutely uncontrollable. Two seconds behind the top is just not acceptable! So after the free qualifying session, the team got together to discuss the next move. Suddenly at the meeting, team director, Mr. Kazuyoshi Hoshino states in Japanese: “Lets change the monocoque! Can you do it by tomorrow?” Benoit’s Japanese is getting better, he is sure he understood, but – by tomorrow?? Instead none of the staff was surprised, “” Give us 6 to 7 hours and we will do it! They replied. And all went back to work. The monocoque was sent from Gotenba; meanwhile the staff happily began disassembling the car. Benoit is astonished and thanks his wonderful staff. Because now there isn’t much he can do to help, Benoit decides to call his French friend, chef “Dominique Doucet” and ask for a late dinner for all the staff to be delivered to the pits, as the y say “with an angry stomach, no work can be fully accomplished”. So the mechanics and all the concerned staff went only briefly back to take a shower and spent all the rest of the hours working on the car until the Saturday morning session start. Saturday morning: there he goes, Benoit’s lap times are gooood! The new monocoque is obviously a used one, in fact the one he had used and crashed at the last season’s final race. It’s not perfect but, just sooooooo much better then the previous day’s feeling! Right now, Benoit aims for nothing but a good Qualifying results! Afternoon Qualifying: The air temperatures exceed the 37 degrees Celsius, and the track is over 54 degrees Celsius; definitely not a cool situation! Are we in a tropical country? Well, at least the tires do not need any extra heating devices (Not that they are allowed but…!) The track is so hot that the tires have lost the grip by the second and actual attack lap. Thanks to Benoit’s careful and gentle driving, he gets to do the three time attacks. He succeeds in finishing Q1 in 10th position, Q2 in 5th and Q3 in 2nd position. After so long away from the front row, its certainly good to be back! And of course, team manager, Mr. Hoshino is more then happy with the results! All thanks to the fantastic work of all the mechanics! Oh but all was still to be tested in the race. In fact and for the first time, this race was a two hits race in a reverse grid system. But of course that did not matter to Benoit, he is here to win! And that is all! The starting signals go off, and although Suzuka is known for being hard to start from the inside that does not bother Benoit! The race starts, Benoit jumps into first position! “Here I go!” Ups, on the second lap, the rear! Something seems wrong with the rear tires… A slow puncture??? Although Benoit insists, by the 5th lap the situation becomes dangerous and he is forced to do an unplanned pit-in. The right rear wheel knot seems to be the cause and in fact it has been affecting many other drivers these recent races. Why does this have to happen now?? “Sigh…” For this reason Benoit has to start the second hit from the very last row. Fortunately that leaves him out of the big crash at the start, in fact he even takes this opportunity to gain one position however, and due to the rear tire poor conditions, he is not able to do the usual overtake show. Things are looking promising though! Let us not loose the hopes for the coming up round in Motegi! He will certainly do his best!
