Three weeks since the Autopolis victory. Benoit has been pretty busy with the Okayama WTCC, coaching the young Asian F Renault V6 rookies and testing the new F Nippon machine for next year. Benoit arrives at Fuji full of positive energy. He must win this title. He must make some bucks (hahah!) and go back home. Due to the sudden decrease in temperature, Jules, the precious little son has caught a heavy cold.
Friday, Nov.7th: the previous night rain has left the track completely wet, the team chooses the appropriate tires for the semi-wet morning free practice. However in the afternoon, when the track has dried up, they can’t make a good lap time. As according to the regulations, the 1200kg XANAVI NISMO GT-R is 140 kg over with an air restrictor of 40kg. Which means something like; you are sprinting with a mask on, can hardly breath and the nose cant stop running, now how uncomfortable can that be?! The main straight here at Fuji Speedway is long enough to make things worse, so they end up in 16th position, or in other words, in last position for the day!
Luckily, the Saturday heavy rains change the scenario completely, No matter how slow you may be in the long straight, one can recover position at the corners, Benoit is a total expert in the rain! He even found his own apex original line that overtakes any GT300 without any time loss. Now how good is that?! Benoit scores the 8th best lap and is able to proceed to the Super Lap. The pit crew is excited; everyone is already celebrating the fact that the rivals for the championship title are not in the SL.
However the rain has stopped for the SL, the team chooses intermediate tires for the lap attack. Benoit seems to be unable to find his new secret apex line and finishes in 9th position. Oh well, were it in the dry, they would have surely been in the very last 16th position, so lets be positive about this!
Sunday, race day: The day begins at 8:35 with free practice. Benoit, to avoid the morning traffic, has left the hotel at 6 am and is still pretty much half asleep. Without any time to recover, it is time for the race start.
During the 8 minute warm up before the formation lap, while Benoit is driving on slicks before entering the Nets Corner, at the moment he is shifting up, the rear tire slips and he hears a sudden and serious crack. Not on the car but on his neck and spine muscles…
Ouch!! After leaving the car in the dummy grid he rushes to the pit for rescue. Tsugio’s sports trainer is standby and quickly and kindly rescues Benoit with some proper massage and taping that will keep him fit at least, until the end of the race. Benoit is deeply grateful and thankful for the trainer’s amazingly fast support.
Benoit returns to the car without being able to turn his neck, he will have to drive this way. Meanwhile outside the weather conditions are iffy, neither rain nor dry. They choose the same intermediate tires as those chosen by their rivals and head for formation lap. However the rain has now stopped completely, this tire selection is no good; Benoit quickly returns to the pit a couple of laps later, for tire change. Many of the other racing machines follow. The NISMO staff does a fantast fast job and in a blink Benoit is back out, on slicks, now in 3rd position. On the out lap, he is closely followed by close friend Andre Lotterer both putting up a great battle, but of course, Benoit keeps the position. Anyway, he can’t turn his neck, which is somehow a protection way of forward concentration during the race.
In spite of all the extra weight, Benoit tries pushing has hard as possible to conquer the 66 lap race, but feels eventually forced to pit stop once again after 22 laps, hands the wheel to Satoshi but the timing isn’t the best. The rain starts to fall once again; Satoshi has to pit stop once again on lap 29 for yet an intermediate tire change, Satoshi drives perfectly to the end and crosses the checkered flag in 9th position, they have won points.
The winner of the race is the CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R who had started the race on slick tires.
Thanks to Benoit’s Japanese family: the IMPUL team’s win, which includes close friend Sebastian Philippe, the XANAVI MISMO is able to win the Champion title for the SUPER GT 2008 season Benoit finally achieves his long awaited SGT overall victory. Benoit takes this opportunity to express his gratitude to all that have supported this victory; unfortunately his neck and spine hurt so much after the race that he is unable to properly greet everybody. Once in Tokyo the SGT racing drivers get together for another famous Roppongi all night celebration. It seems that by then even the neck muscles are all very much relaxed and recovered.
Once again this opportunity is taken to deeply thank all the fans for the fantastic support. Of course all are welcome to the Fuji Speedway NISMO Festival to be held on Nov. 30th (Sun). See you there!
Jules is now almost recovered from his cold, but Benoit whished he could have climbed up on podium together with him.
