Hey guys! I am delighted that our hard work paid off with a win in the Italian GT Championship after being so close several times this season. We’ve had some bad luck this year and should have won at Monza, were it not for a poorly timed safety car and a harsh penalty.
This weekend we were back at Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari di Imola, where we started the season so I knew the track – something that has been a challenge this year, as I don’t know all of the Italian circuits.
In first practice the car was initially running well, but we had a throttle-by-wire issue, that caused us some problems. This also happened in qualifying, costing us time and I’m sure we had the speed to be on pole.
We also struggled with this issue in race one, but it improved as my stint went on, before my team-mate had the same problem. We finished fifth but would have been much higher without the setbacks.
Audi Sport Italia worked all night to find and sort the problem, which they did, improving the car ahead of a wet second race.
Vittorio Ghirelli started the car and had a great battle with a Lamborghini, whilst also looking after the tyres, before he handed the car over to me in fifth position.
When I took over we were 20 seconds behind the lead group, but we decided to attack as the track began to dry out, and I was able to lap two or three seconds quicker than the front-runners.
With encouragement from the team, I continued to push and managed to make my way past the four cars ahead to take the lead. I then managed the tyres to the end of the race ensuring there were no mistakes.
I am very happy for the team, who have been working so hard since the start of the season and really deserve this win. It’s also great to score my first GT3 win with Audi Sport Italia, and hopefully we can take this momentum to Autodromo Vallelunga.
[:fr]Salut à tous ! Nous avons remporté ce week-end notre première victoire en championnat GT italien ! Tout le travail effectué par l’équipe ces derniers mois a fini par payer et je suis vraiment heureux.
Nous aurions déjà dû gagner à Monza en début de saison mais la chance n’avait pas été de notre côté avec le mauvais timing de l’entrée en piste de la Voiture de Sécurité et une pénalité.
Nous étions de retour à Imola et pour la première fois cette saison je n’avais pas à découvrir un nouveau circuit.
La voiture était performante dès les essais libres mais nous avons ensuite eu un problème avec l’accélérateur qui ne fonctionnait pas correctement. Ceci nous a également perturbés pendant les qualifications et coûté pas mal de temps. Nous aurions pu faire la pole.
Le souci a continué pendant la première manche, sauf vers la fin de mon relais. Mon équipier a ensuite eu le même problème et nous terminons finalement cinquièmes.
Audi Sport Italia a travaillé pendant toute la nuit de samedi à dimanche et l’équipe technique a fini par trouver la solution. Nous avions à nouveau une voiture compétitive pour la deuxième manche.
Vittorio Ghirelli a pris le départ et s’est bien battu avec une Lamborghini, tout en ménageant ses pneumatiques. Lorsque je prends la piste, nous sommes en cinquième position, 20 secondes derrière le groupe de tête, et je décide d’attaquer sous la pluie, reprenant deux à trois secondes au tour.
L’équipe m’encourageait à la radio et j’ai continué d’attaquer pour finalement doubler les quatre voitures et prendre la tête de la course ! Lorsque la piste a commencé à sécher, j’ai ensuite ménagé mes pneumatiques jusqu’au drapeau à damier tout en m’assurant de ne pas faire d’erreur.
Je suis vraiment content pour toute l’équipe qui a tellement travaillé depuis le début de la saison ; elle mérite vraiment ce succès. Je suis également heureux d’obtenir ma première victoire en GT3 avec Audi Sport Italia J’espère que nous pourrons continuer sur cette lancée à Autodromo Vallelunga.
